Happy Hour and Dessert in Capitol Hill

Happy Hour Street Tacos with Carne Asada and a Miami Vice from Poquitos.  Poquitos is located in Capitol Hill and they're serving up authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails. Their happy hour deal is a good one- during Ocho hour, everything on the happy hour menu is just $8! I went with a Miami Vice, a classic Pina Colada with Strawberry. This blended cocktail was so fruity and delicious. To eat I had two Carne Asada Street Tacos and a Birria Poquitos Burrito. The Burrito was small and served with a side of Consommé sauce. Both food items were tasty and satisfying.  My husband also had some Street Tacos and a Margarita from the happy hour menu. My sons had a Cheese Quesadilla and beans and rice. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. I first visited Poquitos in 2012, also for happy hour, and I remembered liking it then, too. It was time for a meal there again.  For dessert, we walked about ten minutes west to  Voodoo Doughnut . The Seattle location opened late last ye...

Dinner at Barrel and Bacon

The unique and striking Ube French Toast from Seattle's Barrel and Bacon!

Since my birthday is this week, and happens to be on a Monday, we've been going out during the weekend to celebrate a little early. My family and I dined at Barrel and Bacon, located in the Interbay area. This restaurant serves up American comfort food with a twist. They have a full bar with both unique and classic cocktails such as a Chai Old Fashioned and an Ube drink with rum.

If the Ube French Toast featured above looks familiar, it's because this dessert has gone viral in Las Vegas at its sister restaurant. The daughter of the Vegas restaurant, Truffles N' Bacon, decided to open a similar spot in Seattle but instead of a brunch spot, opened more of a kitchen and bar spot with a happy hour menu. They decided to feature the Ube French Toast at Barrel and Bacon, but featured on the dessert menu, instead of the brunch menu like in Vegas. But more on the Ube French Toast later, first we have to talk about the delicious cocktails and the Ube Waffles and Chicken.

My husband went with the Chai Old Fashioned. This twist on an Old Fashioned had a nice smokey kick with a touch of cinnamon. Highly recommend! I ordered the Blueberry Whiskey Sour which wasn't overly sweet but was fruity and heavy on the bourbon.

We went during happy hour, and there were some inexpensive bites. My son chose the pretzel with cheese sauce which was $8 and my other son ordered the Chicken Strips. They came with fries and were $11. My husband got the Crab Mac and Cheese. This was a heavy and cheesy dish, and since I'm not a big shellfish fan, it tasted a little fishy to me.

The highlight of the dishes we ordered was the Ube Waffle and Chicken. The presentation was stunning since the waffle was a deep purple color and the fried chicken was stacked high and topped with a slaw. The waffle had a hint of sweetness and was light and fluffy. The chicken was cooked perfectly and had a thick crispy coating.

For dessert, we all shared the Ube French Toast. The presentation of this dish was Instagram-worthy and really eye catching. The layers of French Toast with Ube filling looked amazing! But was it tasty? It definitely was! It tasted like cinnamon rolls with a thick, ube cream cheese. The portion was huge, and we barely made a dent in it, so we brought it home to snack on!

Barrel and Bacon is still pretty new. They opened in the former Champagne Diner location. I love how unique the food and drinks are! This was a fun and very tasty early BD dinner out.
