Happy Hour and Dessert in Capitol Hill

Happy Hour Street Tacos with Carne Asada and a Miami Vice from Poquitos.  Poquitos is located in Capitol Hill and they're serving up authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails. Their happy hour deal is a good one- during Ocho hour, everything on the happy hour menu is just $8! I went with a Miami Vice, a classic Pina Colada with Strawberry. This blended cocktail was so fruity and delicious. To eat I had two Carne Asada Street Tacos and a Birria Poquitos Burrito. The Burrito was small and served with a side of Consommé sauce. Both food items were tasty and satisfying.  My husband also had some Street Tacos and a Margarita from the happy hour menu. My sons had a Cheese Quesadilla and beans and rice. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. I first visited Poquitos in 2012, also for happy hour, and I remembered liking it then, too. It was time for a meal there again.  For dessert, we walked about ten minutes west to  Voodoo Doughnut . The Seattle location opened late last ye...

Lunch at Slim's Last Chance

People who say Seattle has no soul or grit anymore should head to the south side to Georgetown. There are bars and restaurants where you can still feel those Seattle vibes of the late 90's, you just have to know where to go. My husband and I visited Slim's Last Chance for lunch. I'd heard amazing things about their chili and I wanted to taste it myself. They've been featured on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives", so I knew it would be really good.

I started with one of their featured cocktails, a Huckleberry Hound. This colorful drink had Huckleberry Vodka and tasted sweet and refreshing. It paired well with my spicy chili. My husband had a Slim's version of an Old Fashioned. For our lunch, I chose a cup of the Brisket n' Bean. This chili had slow smoked brisket, ground beef, fire roasted tomatoes, and red beans. You can also choose toppings for an additional charge. I chose cheddar cheese and diced tomatoes. My husband ordered a cup of the Turkey and White Bean. It had ground turkey, white beans, serrano chilies, and was simmered in a hearty broth. We also shared an order of the cornbread which came with a side of honey butter.

I wish I'd tried this chili sooner. There was thick and tender pieces of brisket and the heat from the fire roasted tomatoes really came through. But the melted cheese on top along with the fresh tomatoes sealed the deal. This chili was the perfect savory dish for a cold March day. The Turkey chili was lighter and didn't have as much flavor as the other. And the cornbread was nice and went well with our chili. If you're 21 or over and you love warm and hearty comfort food, check this place out!
