Happy Hour and Dessert in Capitol Hill

Happy Hour Street Tacos with Carne Asada and a Miami Vice from Poquitos.  Poquitos is located in Capitol Hill and they're serving up authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails. Their happy hour deal is a good one- during Ocho hour, everything on the happy hour menu is just $8! I went with a Miami Vice, a classic Pina Colada with Strawberry. This blended cocktail was so fruity and delicious. To eat I had two Carne Asada Street Tacos and a Birria Poquitos Burrito. The Burrito was small and served with a side of Consommé sauce. Both food items were tasty and satisfying.  My husband also had some Street Tacos and a Margarita from the happy hour menu. My sons had a Cheese Quesadilla and beans and rice. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. I first visited Poquitos in 2012, also for happy hour, and I remembered liking it then, too. It was time for a meal there again.  For dessert, we walked about ten minutes west to  Voodoo Doughnut . The Seattle location opened late last ye...

Lunch at Nero Belgian Waffle Bar

It turns out Vancouver is a big waffle town and I like waffles. I had my eye on one of the best spots for waffles in Vancouver, Nero Belgian Waffle Bar, for a while. Finally it was my chance to eat there and I was looking forward to it. They serve both Liège and Belgian Waffles and they have two locations in Vancouver. Decisions, decisions. But if they involve waffles there's no problem. The Robson St. location is small with limited seating, with a counter service style. Then the Seymour St. spot is sit-down and serves cocktails.

We chose the Seymour location because a lunchtime drink with our waffles sounded just right for vacation. I'm glad we visited this one because the interior was bright and modern, with a large kitchen where you could see your waffles being made. The servers were sweet and helpful. But most importantly, the waffles were not only gorgeous, but delicious.

I chose to go with a dessert waffle for lunch and my husband went savory. Our boys each had two chocolate liege waffles and I had the Orange Mousse on a Liege waffle. It had fresh orange slices and was topped with a dark Belgian chocolate mousse. There was a wow factor when the server placed it in front of me, as the chocolate mousse was stacked high and garnished with orange peel shavings. It looked so rich but the mousse was surprisingly light and the orange slices were really fresh. To pair with my waffle, I had a shot of Bailey's on the rocks. My husband's savory waffle was called the Rocket and was a Belgian waffle with Havarti cheese, arugula, grape tomatoes, and a soft boiled egg. He had a shot of whiskey with his waffle. I loved the flavors of his waffle and how fluffy it was. Plus the ingredients were wholesome and fresh. Our boys' waffles arrived on a wooden plate with the restaurant's name in powdered sugar. They were gobbled up fast and we were scrambling to entertain them while we finished our waffles. But it was worth it to have a nice sit down lunch with drinks in Vancouver.

If you just want to grab a waffle to go, they have a nice selection in a display case when you enter. Nero was just want I want when I travel. Food I can't find at home in a gorgeous setting with friendly service to boot.
