Happy Hour and Dessert in Capitol Hill

Happy Hour Street Tacos with Carne Asada and a Miami Vice from Poquitos.  Poquitos is located in Capitol Hill and they're serving up authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails. Their happy hour deal is a good one- during Ocho hour, everything on the happy hour menu is just $8! I went with a Miami Vice, a classic Pina Colada with Strawberry. This blended cocktail was so fruity and delicious. To eat I had two Carne Asada Street Tacos and a Birria Poquitos Burrito. The Burrito was small and served with a side of Consommé sauce. Both food items were tasty and satisfying.  My husband also had some Street Tacos and a Margarita from the happy hour menu. My sons had a Cheese Quesadilla and beans and rice. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. I first visited Poquitos in 2012, also for happy hour, and I remembered liking it then, too. It was time for a meal there again.  For dessert, we walked about ten minutes west to  Voodoo Doughnut . The Seattle location opened late last ye...

A Visit to Soft Peaks in Vancouver, BC

Our family took a two night getaway to Vancouver, BC for a little spring trip. For us that means a little sightseeing and a lot of eating. First up on my list was a some ice cream at Soft Peaks, located in Gastown. They're the first soft serve organic ice cream in Vancouver and since I'm always on the lookout for quality soft serve, I was all in. The four of us just wanted a few bites so we shared the Mudslide. Vanilla soft serve with chocolate sauce and Tim Tams was presented to us, and we dug in. The ice cream was very creamy and dense. The Tim Tams were sweet and crunchy and paired well with the vanilla ice cream. The store was cute with a staircase leading to a loft with additional seating. After our treat, we wandered around Gastown's cobblestone streets and shopped for souvenirs.

You can't visit Soft Peaks in Gastown without taking a stroll around this unique Vancouver neighborhood. It has plenty of history and interesting architecture. Gastown is named after John "Gassy Jack" Deighton, the man in the statue here, who founded a tavern in 1867 that was the start of Gastown.
The flat iron building is always fun to spot when walking around Gastown.
