Happy Hour and Dessert in Capitol Hill

Happy Hour Street Tacos with Carne Asada and a Miami Vice from Poquitos.  Poquitos is located in Capitol Hill and they're serving up authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails. Their happy hour deal is a good one- during Ocho hour, everything on the happy hour menu is just $8! I went with a Miami Vice, a classic Pina Colada with Strawberry. This blended cocktail was so fruity and delicious. To eat I had two Carne Asada Street Tacos and a Birria Poquitos Burrito. The Burrito was small and served with a side of Consommé sauce. Both food items were tasty and satisfying.  My husband also had some Street Tacos and a Margarita from the happy hour menu. My sons had a Cheese Quesadilla and beans and rice. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. I first visited Poquitos in 2012, also for happy hour, and I remembered liking it then, too. It was time for a meal there again.  For dessert, we walked about ten minutes west to  Voodoo Doughnut . The Seattle location opened late last ye...

Date Night at New Luck Toy

New Luck Toy is a bar in West Seattle. They are not a restaurant, they are very clear on that, so don't go looking for someone to greet you at the door and seat you. Its every man for themselves at New Luck Toy, at this eclectic spot on California Ave. where they serve Chinese food and liquor filled slushies. What attracted me to the space was the bright red lanterns that cover the entire ceiling. They even have a private Karaoke room where you can sing to your hearts content, video games, and ski-ball. On a Saturday night it was standing room only, and we watched group after group of people come inside with no place to sit. You are asked to take a number when you walk in and then wait for a table. My husband and I snagged one of the last seats at the bar. Of course one of the black intimate booths under all the red lanterns would have been nice, but we were just lucky to get a seat at this popular hang out. He started with a Rainer Beer and a shot of Jamson Whiskey and I decided to try one of their signature drinks. I ended up getting a Passion Fruit Caiparinha-a fruity blended cocktail that tasted like mango and lime and had a salted rim. We also shared one of the frozen drinks-one of the four drinks from the slushy machines-a Hurricane. It had dark rum, light rum, passion fruit, orange, and lime. It was served in a Tiki glass and came with a little umbrella, for a nice tropical touch. To soak up the booze, we each ordered a dish from the menu. He had the General Tso's Chicken and I ordered the Broccoli and Beef. Both dishes were way too spicy and it was hard to enjoy the flavors and the high quality of the meat. After glancing at the menu, we noticed that the popular Chinese dish, Beef Chow Fun, was served without the beef in it. So not really the same thing, but no seemed to notice or care. The owners have their own take on the cuisine and they must be doing something right because of how packed the place was. When we finished eating, we hopped down from our bar stools and two people immediately took them. On our way out we spotted the Karaoke room and sang and sang till we were ready to call it a night.
