Happy Hour and Dessert in Capitol Hill

Happy Hour Street Tacos with Carne Asada and a Miami Vice from Poquitos.  Poquitos is located in Capitol Hill and they're serving up authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails. Their happy hour deal is a good one- during Ocho hour, everything on the happy hour menu is just $8! I went with a Miami Vice, a classic Pina Colada with Strawberry. This blended cocktail was so fruity and delicious. To eat I had two Carne Asada Street Tacos and a Birria Poquitos Burrito. The Burrito was small and served with a side of Consommé sauce. Both food items were tasty and satisfying.  My husband also had some Street Tacos and a Margarita from the happy hour menu. My sons had a Cheese Quesadilla and beans and rice. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. I first visited Poquitos in 2012, also for happy hour, and I remembered liking it then, too. It was time for a meal there again.  For dessert, we walked about ten minutes west to  Voodoo Doughnut . The Seattle location opened late last ye...

A Visit to Beta5 Chocolates in Vancouver, BC

Two decadent Cream Puffs from Beta5 Chocolates.

For my sons' mid-winter break, we took a trip to Vancouver, BC and stayed two nights. I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again-Vancouver is a foodie's dream. The main activities on our trip were eating, because the food scene is that good.

Our first stop was Beta5 Chocolates, located in the Mt. Pleasant area. Their Cream Puffs looked incredible and unique. Upon entering, we were greeted with a huge and colorful array of chocolates. Forget jewelry stores, a dessert shop like this is more my scene. Then around the counter the Cream Puffs await, looking almost too pretty to eat. It was a hard decision, but I went with the chocolate one, the Variations of Chocolate Cream Puff. My son chose the Salted Caramel Cream Puff. And my son loves croissants, so he got one of those. My husband had a little of ours, since he's not a big sweets person.

The cream puffs were on the messy side, but that was soon forgotten when we took a bite. My chocolate one had a nice and crispy outside just covered in chocolate. A surprise of three layers of goodness awaited when I cut into it. The bottom had a cocoa nib custard, then a small layer of chocolate blackout cake, and then a dark chocolate mousse. To say this treat was rich would be an understatement. The Salted Caramel was a little lighter. This cream puff had caramel mousse, salted caramel sauce, and caramel Chantilly. The store itself was bright and modern and I liked the colorful light fixtures.
