A Visit to Castella Cheesecake in Vancouver, BC
Our family took an overnight trip to Vancouver, BC recently. It was our last little vacay before school starts next month. We all love Vancouver and it seems to get better and better every time we visit. Their food scene is incredible and I always find unique foods I can't get in Seattle. I always have a list of spots that I find on Instagram and Yelp, then when we go I fine tune it. This trip we only had one and a half days, but I was surprised by how many spots we checked out in that time. Yeah, we ate a lot and spent a lot, but it really was a time. We had so much fun, it was hard to go home.
Our first stop was Castella Cheesecake on Robson St. This little cafe serves Japanese Buttermilk Ice Cream, Souffle Cheesecake, Cheese Tarts, and coffee and tea. We shared an ice cream cone and two of the cheese tarts. The ice cream was very mild in flavor, and a little sour from the buttermilk. It was really creamy and refreshing, but it was a little too subtle in flavor for me. I loved how the soft serve looked though, and I wished they had this style at home. They also offer it in cups with toppings, which would have been so good.
The cheese tarts were really top notch. They offer two styles- less baked and more baked. The lesser baked tarts are not as dense, they are lighter and softer. And the more baked the tarts are the more dense, firm and creamier they are. They also have a bruleed top, which is what dessert dreams are made of. We chose the more baked option and I'm happy we did. The cheese tarts were warm and creamy, and we really liked the crackly top. The crust was buttery and held the filling perfectly. How do they compare to regular cheesecake? These were warm, softer, and not as dense.
It was so fun trying these Japanese desserts. I'm thankful that Vancouver offers such a wide variety of foods to enjoy. And I'm happy Vancity's only a few hours away from Seattle!
