Flag and Star Cookies for the 4th of July

The 4th of July is in a couple of days and I wanted to create a festive dessert. I chose something simple and semi homemade because I thought it would be a fun project to do with my kids. We made sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting and then we decorated them. We used a star cookie cutter and did stars with sprinkles. I used a knife to make rectangles for a flag shape. Then we arranged blueberries and strawberries pieces to decorate them.

Feel free to make your own sugar cookie dough. To safe time, we used Pillsbury. Instead of slicing the dough into circles I followed the directions on the package for using a cookie cutter. It recommended adding 1/4 cup flour and to knead the dough with the flour. This method worked well and we were able to cut out our shapes. While the cookies were baking we whipped up the cream cheese frosting. We used one package of cream cheese (softened), 1/2 t. vanilla extract, and 1/4 cup sugar.

Before we knew it, the cookies were out of the oven. Once they cooled, we frosted and decorated them. The kids had fun and we all enjoyed a cookie after they were done. They tasted a little like cheesecake because of the cream cheese frosting and the fresh fruit on the flag ones.

If you're looking for a relatively easy treat to make for Independence Day, this is a fun and delicious one! Have a wonderful and safe 4th!
